An edgy city, a stay in Harare is enhanced by the use of a Harare hire car, especially as it gives you an element of safety when travelling around it. Don’t risk leaving it until you arrive before arranging a car for you’re likely to be ripped off and receive an unreliable vehicle. The only way you can ensure you get a quality vehicle and not pay a fortune for it is by pre-booking through us.

Harare Mini Guide

How to get to Harare
There are several flights from South Africa and in particular Johannesburg. There’s also a single flight from Durban. Once at the airport, Airport Road transports you straight into the city where you’ll join the inner ring road. Traffic can be chaotic at times but the roads have good signage.

Getting out of Harare
Roads A1 to A5 form a star of roads that enter and leave the city and all are connected by the inner ring road. The roads are in reasonable condition but a renting a 4x4 in Harare is still a good idea.

What to see out of Harare
Epworth Balancing Rocks are a good excursion off the A4. A geological feature, despite their precarious nature, it’s believed they’ve been in the same position for thousands of years. Driving to Victoria Falls is not out of the question but you need to be sure of yourself and your driving skills.

Where to Stay in Harare
There are some decent hotels despite the economic chaos. We like the Rainbow Towers but it’s not cheap at R3000 a night. Better value is the Holiday Inn at R1000.

What Shouldn’t I Miss in Harare?
  • Colonial Architecture. The country is keen to preserve its heritage and has many beautiful buildings in the capital. The Mining Pension Fund Building is a prime example.
  • National Museum. If you’re going to visit Great Zimbabwe, take a look at the exhibits in the National Museum first. It also houses the country’s art collection.
  • Botanical Gardens. Also a game park, over nine hundred tree and plant species are found  here and the gardens are well tended, meaning that it’s a great place to while away a few hours.
  • Kopje. For great views out over the city, take a picnic and a camera to the summit of this granite mound in the city. Avoid it though at dusk and night.
