Zambia Mini Guide

How do I get to Zambia?
Lusaka is becoming a very popular and busy airport and partly because of the holiday traffic from South Africa. Airlink and South African fly from Johannesburg whilst South African Express flies from Durban.

How do I travel around Zambia?
The country is about the size of France and as such you’re looking at a 15 – 24 hour drive over longer distances. Because of the size, many people choose to use internal flights and Proflight Zambia are the airline that do most of the domestic flying between the main cities and destinations.

Driving in Zambia
You need to drive on the left in Zambia and the roads are generally in poor condition. Four wheel drive is essential out of the main cities and during the rainy season, in them too! Driving standards are poor and accidents are common.

What are the Hotels Like?
Top hotels such as the Intercontinental will set you back up to R3000 whilst mid-range independently owned ones are more reasonable at around R500. You can always rough it at reasonable hostels for R120 a night!

What Should I see When I’m in Zambia?
  • The Victoria Falls. Usually thought of as being in Zimbabwe, you can access them from the Zambian side too for a different perspective of these magnificent waterfalls.
  • Kafue National Park. The world’s second largest and the size of a small country, this park has Africa’s ‘Big Five’ as well as superb vistas. You’ll need a good map and plenty of time and fuel to see it properly.
  • The Zambezi. This is the river that plunges over the Victoria Falls but deeper into Zambia it is languid enough to cruise or kayak, watching countless species of wildlife on the shore.
  • Shopping in Lusaka. The Soweto Market is the place to go for just about everything and it’s where you’ll see the mass of humanity in the city congregating together to make a living.
