How do I get to Houston?
The main airport is George Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport but it has no flights from Africa. It’s still not too difficult to get to for you can connect via Heathrow, Atlanta, Washington or New York and maybe enjoy a few days stopover on the way. The easiest route for the half hour journey from the airport is along the airport road west until it joins route 69 then head south to the city centre.

Getting Around Houston
Route 8, the Sam Houston Parkway/Tollway is a circular route that encompasses the city but, despite the small charge for using it, it makes hopping into and out of parts of the city very easy.

Getting out of the City
Roads including Interstate 69, 45 and 10 form spokes to and from the city centre making outbound travel easy. Galveston and Surfside are two great beaches southeast of Houston, around an hour away, whilst Schlitterbahn is a little heard of but brilliant waterpark three hours west of the city.

Where to Stay
We like the Wyndham Houston West Energy, just off Interstate 10. Rooms there are around R1000 a night but the hotel is wonderful. For something cheaper, the Red Roof Inn is only R650 a night but a little more basic.

What Must I see When I’m in Houston?

• Space Centre Houston. Probably one of the most famous places on earth, Mission Control Houston has overseen several firsts for mankind, now it’s your chance to see where it all happens.
• The Children’s Museum. Often it’s a struggle finding things for kids to do in cities but the Children’s Museum answers the problem. You’ll struggle to tear them away.
• Art Car Parade. You’ll have to be there in May for this but it’s something special as hundreds of wacky cars parade by, some hardly looking like cars.
• Houston Rodeo. In the heart of cowboy country you’ve got the world’s largest rodeo event every spring. Even if you don’t like ‘western entertainment’ you should see this just for the spectacle.
