How do I get to the US?
Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport is the only one with direct flights to US cities. OR Tambo flies to New York and Atlanta with South African and Delta.
Getting to your accommodation is far easier by collecting a hire car at the airport although you might want to experience a cab ride – all part of being in America!
Getting Around the US
Distances are big so domestic flights are very popular. Southwestern are generally acknowledged to be the cheapest but there are several operators on some routes. Eating out in the US
Food is great value in the US and is delicious too. You may want to eat fast and cheap and you won’t find better take away options anywhere else in the world. Restaurants are also great value and American steaks are renowned. Try the pizzas too and decide for yourself whether it’s New York or Chicago that does them best. In the deep south, Cajun food is spicy but delicious and Tex Mex cranks up the heat a little more with great chilli recipes.
Hotels and Motels
Accommodation is also great value and unless you’re really on a budget it’s probably not worth bothering with motels. In most cities you can get nice room only accommodation for around R750.

- New York. The city that never sleeps and typical of the energy that is the US. Don’t miss Ground Zero, Central Park, Times Square or the great fast food
- California. A complete contrast to the east coast. It’s laid back, warm and sunny with sights like Death Valley, the Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood and more
- Washington DC. The country’s capital and home to many famous buildings and museums. With more culture than excitement, it’s a good stopover for a few days.
- Florida. The nation’s winter playground and considered ‘Caribbean’. Get a tan, go game fishing or just enjoy the theme parks including Disney.
