Birmingham is in the heart of England and as such is the perfect place to begin your discovery of the land of Shakespeare. The city is big –the biggest in England after London, but the road network is efficient and so a Birmingham hire car is the recommended way to see the sights. It’s also a very convenient way to transport all the shopping you’ll do there.

Birmingham Mini Guide

Getting to Birmingham
The city is easily accessed from most parts of England thanks to the excellent motorway network. If you’re flying in, then Birmingham Airport is the closest to the city although East Midlands Airport is also quite close. There are no direct flights from South Africa to Birmingham so you’ll have to make a connection to the airport.

Travelling Outside the City
With several motorways including the M6, M54 and the M42 circling the city, getting out from Birmingham is very easy. Try a trip to Stratford upon Avon to see the home of Britain’s most famous playwright and poet; William Shakespeare.

Places to Stay
Stay at the breath-taking Radisson Blu Hotel looking like a huge glistening waterfall towering over the city. Such opulence will cost you only £85 a night in June whilst the popular chain; Jury’s Inn, will set you back only £60 for a night’s stay close to the city centre.

Must See Places in Birmingham
  • Cadbury World. If you love chocolate then you’ll love Cadbury World. As well as the historic story of the company’s development there’s a fantastic walking journey through the development of Cadbury’s products and plenty of free samples along the way.
  • The Bullring. Once a faded and shabby shopping centre, a complete revamp, finished in the last few years has seen it transformed into one of the top shopping centres in the UK. Bring your wallet and plenty of time for it’s a shopper’s paradise.
  • National Exhibition Centre. The NEC, as it is more popularly called, is packed year round with events and concerts so check out listings online before you travel to see what’s on.
  • Aston Hall. In the Aston suburb of Birmingham, you’ll find this beautiful Jacobean mansion complete with cannon damage from the Civil War and fabulous exhibitions of furniture and painting. Every other year at Christmas, the grounds are candle lit in a wonderful celebration of the season.
