UAE Mini Guide

How do I get there?
Dubai has flights from Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg whilst Abu Dhabi has only flights from Johannesburg. The airports are always very close to the city centres and with great road links, hire cars are the best way to get around.

Travelling Around the United Arab Emirates
There are internal flights between the major centres, mostly because driving the relatively short distances between cities can be arduous and often dangerous. If you’re going to drive, make sure you’re well prepared but expect to spend the journey open-mouthed as you marvel at sand dunes and the solitude of the Empty Quarter.

Hotels in the United Arab Emirates
At the moment, due to vast over-capacity following the boom years, hotel prices in the UAE are surprisingly cheap. With five star hotels from around R800 a night, splash out on luxury while you still can.

What Shouldn’t I Miss When in the UAE?
  • Dubai. For shopping, incredible architecture and grand plans, nowhere beats Dubai. There’s also world beating entertainment for the whole family too.
  • The Desert. A complete contrast to the city, the Arabian Desert is a spectacular place to spend a night. Whether as a group or with the local Berber tribes, you’ll have a magical night underneath a million stars.
  • The Beaches. Not renowned as beach resorts, the cities of the UAE take their relaxation along the sandy beaches of the eastern coast. Completely deserted in some places, you’ll have a great choice of white sand and idyllic blue waters.
  • History. Whilst all looks modern and brash, there’s an interesting and colourful history to the federation of states. Seek out the old towns of the modern cities then the museums and see a different side to the Emirates.
