Zurich Mini Guide

How do I get to Zurich?
The city has direct flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg so getting there is easy and reasonably priced. The airport is located in the northern suburbs and the motorway A51 takes you straight into the city centre, a journey of around ten minutes.

Getting Around the City
Motorways A1, A3, A3W and A4 circle the city giving quick access to all parts. Spoke roads off these ensure traffic flows smoothly.

Out of Zurich
Drive 45 minutes towards Neuhausen and spend some time at Europe’s highest waterfalls, the Rhine Falls. Whilst there, spend some time in the very beautiful town of Schaffhausen. If you fancy skiing, visit the genteel resort of Flumserberg which has over sixty kilometres of ski pistes.

Staying in Zurich
The very nice Zurich Marriott will set you back around R2200 a night. The equally comfortable Ramada is a bit cheaper at R1900 a night.

Not to be Missed in Zurich
  • The Grossmunster. It sounds strange but it’s one of the most important churches in Zurich and the base of its reformism. The renowned theologian Zwingli was minister here in the early 16th century.
  • The Kunsthaus. This is Switzerland’s premier art museum and full of impressive European art. If you don’t want to pay, go on Wednesdays when it’s free entry.
  • The Lakeside. As with Geneva, there’s a beautiful lakeside walk, around three kilometres long, with superb views. Partway along, there’s a picnic site popular with the locals.
  • Boat trips on the Zurichsee. A perfect way to see the city from a different perspective and to enjoy cooling lake breezes in the summer.
