How do I get to Berne?
The city’s airport serves mainly holiday flights with only one useful hub airport amongst its destinations. You can fly to Amsterdam and connect there otherwise it’s a tortuous route through some of Europe’s holiday airports. The airport is southwest of the city and accessed along the A6 motorway then turning off onto the B6 direct into the city.

Getting Around Berne
A compact city, Berne is surrounded on three sides by the A1, A12 and B10.  The B10 forms part of an inner city ring road whilst the old city walls and gates form landmarks for those heading in and out of the city.

Out of Berne
The city is a great base for exploring the natural beauty and dramatic scenery of the Bernese Oberland. Mountain resorts such as Grindelwald, Interlaken and Gstaad are all within an hour’s drive and give the perfect balance between city and country.

Staying in Berne
The Hotel Allegro is an attractive hotel with welcoming staff. It’s going to cost you around R2400 a night but it’s still good value. Cheaper at R1600 a night is the city centre located Hotel Kreuz.

What are the Highlights of Berne?

• Berne Historical Museum. This is the second largest museum in Switzerland and has an extensive collection dating back to pre-history. It also has a collection of artefacts related to the city’s famous son; Einstein.
• The Einsteinhaus. For more detail on the world’s most famous scientist, visit his former home which is set out as it was when he lived there. Manuscripts and early experiments litter the museum.
• Zytglogge. Be outside this clock tower in the old city at midday for an amusing set of mechanical time telling. Various characters emerge and disappear using technology to bang drums, ring bells and more. It’s a lot of fun.
• Bear Pits. These can be a little distressing but the bears are kept as a living symbol of the city they’ve been linked to for centuries. You may not like what you see but their conditions are improving under international pressure.
