How do I get to Basel?
The nearest airport you can fly to directly from South Africa is Zurich which has flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town. You could also consider Frankfurt. No direct flights go to Basel Airport and you’re likely to use it only if you’ve made a stopover somewhere else in Europe. The A35 motorway takes you directly into Basel in under ten minutes.

Getting Around Basel
Being at the junction of three countries, several motorways lead into Basel making access in and out very easy. The city is quite compact having been limited in growth by politics and you should encounter few difficulties getting around.

Out of Basel
You have the chance of visiting three countries during your stay with France and Germany being on the city’s boundaries. Zurich isn’t far away within Switzerland and is a good bet for a day out.

What Should I see in Basel?

• The Old City. This contains many of the city’s most famous landmarks including the Munster and the Renaissance palace that is the Rathaus.  
• Museums. The city has over twenty of note, the best of which are the art galleries. Try the Beyeler Foundation for one of the most impressive collections.
• The Puppenhausmuseum is a favourite with children for it houses the largest collection of historic teddy bears in the world.
• The Sewage System. Despite not sounding too appealing, you can take a tour of this medieval network of tunnels (now no longer used) and see over a kilometre of underground Basel.
