Visiting the stunning capital city of Spain will be so much more enjoyable with a hire car, especially in summer when the temperature rises. All our Madrid hire cars have air conditioning which makes them much more comfortable than walking or using public transport to get around the sights.

Madrid Mini Guide

Getting to Madrid
Shocking but maybe not surprising is that there are no direct flights to Madrid from South Africa as the airport is a hub to mainly Spanish speaking countries. You’ll have to fly into one of the other European hub airports and continue your journey from there. Depending on time and inclination you can choose from Paris, London, Frankfurt or Amsterdam. The airport is northeast of the city and a little tricky to navigate from. The best route is south on the M14 then west on the M40 straight into the city centre.

Getting Around Madrid
Despite being a huge city, most of the main sights are concentrated in the centre surrounded by the M30 circular motorway. Stay within this and you’ll find everything you’ll want.

Out of Madrid
Head out towards the M30 and from that you can access much of Spain thanks to the city’s central location. Several UNESCO accredited sights are within easy driving distance including Alcala de Henares where Don Quixote was written;  Segovia with its Roman viaduct and the National Mint, and Toledo, the walled former capital of Spain.

Where Should I Stay in Madrid?
Good accommodation is cheap in Madrid so try the Praktik Metropol at R600 a night for simple but modern accommodation or the Sterling at R550 a night for an equally good standard.

What Mustn’t I Miss in Madrid?
  • The Prado is Spain’s premier art museum and contains many famous paintings. You should allow a whole day for exploring the huge collection and then some time in the great gift shop afterwards.
  • Palacio Real translates as the royal palace and is the official but not actual home of King Juan and Queen Sofia. It’s considered one of the finest examples of European architecture and is located in a stunning position overlooking parts of the city.
  • Almudena Cathedral is the city’s most important religious building. It was only completed within the last thirty years but it’s where the births, marriages and deaths of Spanish royalty are celebrated.
  • Eat tapas in the city that does them best. Despite not inventing them, Madrid has stolen their secret and has a huge range of the small dishes. Rather than eat a traditional meal, order several plates and some dry vermouth and simply enjoy.
