Nairobi is the chaotic but fascinating capital of this energetic country. Spread over a wide area and surrounded by a wildlife park, hire car is essential if you’re not to be stuck in your hotel or wait for unreliable public transport.

Nairobi Mini Guide

Getting to Nairobi
The city is easily accessed from South Africa with daily flights on South African or Kenya Airways flights from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport. The airport is southeast of the city centre and nine miles along the A104 Mombasa Road, you’ll be in the city centre.

Getting out of Nairobi
The A2, A109 and A104 intersect in the city and afford an easy way of getting out into the Kenyan countryside. There’s a lot to see outside Nairobi including the village of Thika, famed from the novel ‘Flame Trees of Thika’ and the beautiful Lake Naivasha.

Nairobi Hotels
The Sarova Stanley is a luxury hotel with prices to match. Expect to pay around R2700 a night for a stay. The comfortable Sentrim, at the other end of the scale is a much more manageable R1600 a night.

What Should I see in Nairobi?
  • Karen Blixen Museum. Those who’ve seen the film ‘Out of Africa’ will want to see the museum that was the home of the film’s subject. Filled with artefacts from her life, it’s a fascinating insight into life in colonial Kenya.
  • The National Museum. Kenya is one of Africa’s best known countries but to find out about its history and culture, a trip to the National Museum is a must. Dating right back to prehistoric man, you’ll get a comprehensive story of the country and people.
  • The Railway Museum. The train was the tool of economic success in the country in colonial times and the railway museum has many of the old steam engines that used to haul the country’s produce to the coastal ports for export.
  • The National Park. Maybe not the best safari park in Kenya but it’s certainly the most convenient for your stay. Encircling the city, it has many of the game species that Africa is famous for and certainly worth the journey.
