How do I get to Rome?
Surprisingly there are no direct flights from South Africa so you’ll have to connect via a hub airport. All of the most convenient ones are north of the city so you’ll find your journey is longer than you may have hoped. Try Zurich as the closest or perhaps spend a few days in Paris, London or Amsterdam first. The airport is on the coast, west of the city, but it’s easy to get in with a hire car along the E80 which goes right into the heart of the city.

Getting Around Rome
The A90 forms a big circular route around the city with plenty of motorways and other routes into the city centre. The centre is a little chaotic but it’s not too hard to access with a little care and a good map.

Out of the City
You’ll maybe not have much time to get out of Rome itself but if culture and city life get too much then Pompeii isn’t beyond reach or you could drive through the Frascati region where the delicious light white wine is produced.

Staying in Rome
The Villa San Lorenzo Maria is a lovely small hotel set in a traditional building. The good thing is it will only cost you R650 in an otherwise expensive city. Equally nice but a little more modern is the Villa San Pio, only a little more expensive at R700 a night.

Must see in Rome…

• There’s so much it’s hard to narrow it down but make sure you see:
• The Colosseum, which is probably the city’s most iconic sight. In real life a lot bigger than you’d imagine, it’s in great shape for a building over two millennia old.
• The Vatican City. A country within a city, all, Catholic or otherwise, can marvel at the Sistine Chapel, St Peter’s Basilica and the Papal Palace.
• The Tiber, Rome’s life blood has been an important aspect of its development over history and whether it’s a stroll along it or a boat trip on it, you’ll see some great sights on its banks.
• Campo Marzio. This doesn’t sound reminiscent of anything but it’s where you’ll find most of the museums tracking the artistic and cultural history of Rome.
