Getting to Naples
With no direct flights from South Africa, you’ll be relieved to have a choice of several European hub destinations. The closest is Zurich but you may decide upon London, Paris, Amsterdam or Frankfurt, depending on your plans. The airport is slightly north of the city and accessed via two parallel roads that take you down onto the coast. The coast road is often jammed with traffic so expect your journey to be around an hour at peak times.

Getting Around Naples
Again, the traffic system around the city is heavily dependent on the coastal route and when that gets busy, you must expect city-wide chaos. Try to travel out of peak times for stress-free driving.

Getting Away From Naples
Vesuvius is around an hour from the city and a spectacular contrast to Naples. Benevento, inland, is the only city of note nearby, whilst a boat trip out to Capri should be on everyone’s list.

The Royal Continental on the seafront is quite special but with a low price. It has a fabulous rooftop pool and costs only R1050 a night. In the centre, the Santa Brigida is also nice but not as modern and can be enjoyed for R1000 a night.

What’s There to see and do in Naples?

• Visit Castelnuovo. A trip to this huge medieval castle allows you to find out a lot about the city’s history through its museum’s exhibits then finish off with the perfect view out over the city from the castle roof.
• Boat trip to Capri. This is the former home of the renowned Gracie Fields and is a beautiful garden island. One of the must do things in the whole of Italy is said to be a visit to the island.
• Vesuvius. Ever brooding over the city, Mount Vesuvius entertains with a puff of smoke or a shiver now and again. You can climb to the summit but you must take a guide, for it occasionally belches poisonous gas.
• Try the food. From mouth-watering pizzas to the speciality ice creams, Naples is a gastronome’s dream.
