How do I get to Munich?
There are no direct flights to Munich from South Africa but you can fly to several European hubs and connect from there including Heathrow, Paris and Amsterdam. A fun hub destination is Mauritius, if you fancy a few days on the beach in between! The airport is several miles away but connected via the A92 Autobahn.

Getting Around Munich
Autobahn 99 forms a circular around the city giving quick access to all the parts of the city with spoke roads heading into the centre.

Out and About
Schloss Nymphenburg is a huge stately home just outside the city and was the summer home of the kings of Bavaria. The beautiful lake Chiemsee is around an hour out of the city and is the biggest lake in southern Germany.

Where Should I Stay?
The Kempinski Munchen is probably the top hotel in the city but will cost you an eye-watering R11500 a night. The functional Hotel Kavun is much better value at R1200 a night!

Top Sights in Munich

• Oktoberfest. If you’re in the city in the autumn, the world’s biggest and most famous beer festival takes place in October. Make new friends and have a riotous time.
• The Frauenkirche. Built in the 15th century, it’s a huge church that can hold 20,000 worshippers. It has two massive towers as well as its main attraction; the devil’s footprint!
• Rathaus Glockenspiel. Be at the Rathaus each day at 11 am, midday or 5pm and see an amazing performance from the town hall’s clock.
• City Museum. This tells the story of the city’s history and a fascinating one it is too. Going back way before its rise in the Roman Empire, you’ll be able to see how the city became a symbol of the country’s power.
