  2. France
France is one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations and with direct flights to Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport from South Africa, it should be on your list too. When you get there, the best way of getting around is by hire car as France is huge geographically, with a small population yet great roads, meaning that driving is a pleasure.

France Mini Guide

Getting to France
There are direct flights to Paris’ main airport; Charles de Gaulle from Johannesburg and Cape Town airports so getting there’s not a problem. Many of the cities and towns have their own regional airports to which you can fly from Paris. You may find that some of the southern French destinations are more easily accessed from Frankfurt or Zurich, both with flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Getting Around the Country
It’s quite big but the road system is good. You’ll have to pay tolls on most of the motorway system meaning that an internal flight can be a cheaper option. Traffic is only a problem in the big cities at busy times, otherwise, driving is a pleasure.

Hotels in France
The quality of hotels in France is very high and you can get a nice place to stay such as the chain hotel group Ibis for around R800 a night.

Highlights of France
  • Paris. The universally recognised city of romance and full of things to see and do; from a beautiful romantic meal to a night time trip up the Eiffel Tower to see the city below you in all its glory. Visit Notre Dame, Montmartre and take a boat trip on the Seine.
  • The Cote d’Azur
  • This beautiful coastline has inspired artists for centuries and a visit there will show you why. Warm soft sunlight and spectacular views just make you want to reach for your brushes.
  • The Alps
  • Find some of the best skiing in Europe at resorts such as Chamonix and Courchevel. In summer the air is crisp and clear and great for open top driving or walking.
  • French Food
  • Still ranked as the greatest cuisine in the world, save plenty of room for delights such as escargot, foie gras, the fabulous patisserie and delicious desserts.
