Melbourne Mini Guide

How do I get to Melbourne?
There are no direct flights from South Africa to Melbourne despite it being Australia’s second biggest city. You can fly direct to Sydney, perhaps spending a few days there before flying on to Melbourne. The airport is to the north of the city centre and the 14 mile journey is best done via the Citylink Tollway.

Getting Around Melbourne
The Western Ring Road and the M3 form a broken circular route around the city which is a good focal point for accessing the centre. If you get lost, just head for it and you’ll soon find your bearings.

Out of Melbourne
The Yarra Valley offers opportunities for wine tasting and is beautiful, especially when the vines are freshly in leaf. Your hire car can also get you to the Dandenong Ranges, mountains that have great views out over the south coast.

Where to Stay in Melbourne
At R2700, the Rialto is a beautiful and historic place to stay. For around the same money, the modern Crowne Plaza lies on the waterside and has views from the top floor.

What are the Must see Parts of Melbourne?
  • Flinders Street Railway Station, The icon of the city, this station is the one of the oldest parts of the city and a favourite meeting place for the people of Melbourne.
  • Old Melbourne Gaol. This is where Ned Kelly was help prior to his execution. Today it’s run as a themed attraction where you can be arrested and put in the gaol.
  • The Police Museum. This attraction has more information on the life and times of Ned Kelly and the hunt for him.
  • St Kilda. This is a very genteel part of the city and is where many of the people of Melbourne go for a day out. Little changed since Victorian times, it’s a complete contrast to the modern city.
