Lusaka is the very cosmopolitan capital of Zambia and a great place to begin your gentle discovery of the country. First, you need to collect a pre-booked Lusaka hire car and this can be done from one of many collection points in the city. Pre-booking makes sense because it guarantees you the best price when you book and gives you the greatest choice of rental vehicles; not just the ones that are left.

Lusaka Mini Guide

How do I get to Lusaka?
There are three flights into Lusaka from South Africa; Airlink and South African fly from Johannesburg whilst South African Express offers a daily service from Durban. The airport road takes you south onto the T4 which heads west into the centre of Lusaka.

Getting Around the Capital
The T2 runs north/south though the city whilst the T4 joins it from the east. Around these main roads are countless small streets leaving an air of chaos on the minor routes made worse by missing signage and traffic jams. Try to aim for the main roads then turn off from them.

Get out of the City
The beaches of Lake Kariba, popular with Zambians, is around 2.5 hours away whilst some drive to Livingstone from the capital but this is only recommended if you’re a confident driver. Elsewhere there are countless safari parks and lodges within an hour of the city.

Where can I Stay in Lusaka?
Two great hotels are the Taj Pamodzi Hotel and the Radisson Blu. Both will set you back around R1500 a night but the quality is worth every rand.

What Shouldn’t I Miss in Lusaka?
  • Munda Wanga Environmental Park. One of the most popular in Africa, it includes animals and plants and is trying to work miracles to preserve the environmental future of the country.
  • The National Museum. For the story of Zambia, this place is hard to beat. It even has the authentic museum smell you associate with such places – very atmospheric!
  • Soweto Market. The main shopping district of Lusaka- at least for the locals. For fun, think of something completely random then see if you can find it on sale!
  • Lilayi Lodge. For those who don’t want to risk the terrible roads, Lilayi Lodge brings the wildlife close to the heart of the city and you can imagine yourself out on safari yet only minutes from your hotel.
