How do I get to San Francisco?
There’s no way to fly there directly from South Africa so it’ll mean a stopover at London’s Heathrow or alternatively a connection from New York’s JFK or Atlanta. It’s easy once you’ve arrived at the airport.  Just collect your pre-booked hire car and head north on Route 101 and you’ll be in the city centre in minutes.

What About Getting Around San Francisco?
San Francisco is at the tip of a peninsula and has two ways across to the mainland; The Golden Gate or the Dwight Eisenhower Highway as well as Route 101 south. It all makes getting around and out of the city quite simple.

What can I see out of San Francisco?
Sausalito at the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge is a great place to see the city from. It’s also a beautiful town in its own right. Napa Valley, home to some of the New World’s most famous vineyards is under an hour away and is staggering in its beauty.

The Grant Plaza, right next to Chinatown is a great value and comfortable place to stay. It’s cheap at R800 for a night. In downtown San Francisco you’ll find the San Francisco Marriot Marquis, a little piece of luxury for around R2000 a night.

What Must I see in San Francisco?

• The Golden Gate Bridge. Emblematic of the city, drive over it then take pictures of it from the bay side. Try to get there at sunrise to see it emerge from the mist or at sunset for a pink tinged glow.
• Alcatraz Prison. A little dark and sinister, the boat trip out together with the tour really makes you think about the life the prisoners endured so far from the mainland.
• Chinatown. San Francisco’s Chinatown is one of the most renowned worldwide and has so much to see and do even if you’re not going to eat the delicious food there.
• Fisherman’s Wharf. A little over-rated and touristy, the wharf has been a popular tourist destination for decades and is worth a visit as long as you know what to expect.
