How do I get to Phoenix?
You won’t be able to fly directly to Phoenix but by connecting with BA via Heathrow or Delta or US Airways via Atlanta, you shouldn’t find it too onerous to get from Johannesburg to Phoenix. Sky Harbor Airport is virtually in the city and by taking the airport road to join Route 10, it’s a five minute ride into the centre.

Getting Around Phoenix
Routes 101, 202and 60 form a figure of eight around the centre of Phoenix and from it a grid system marks out the streets of Phoenix. The traffic is free flowing and most people use cars to get around.

Getting out of Phoenix
In the middle of nowhere, it’s easy to get out of the city. Route 10 goes west and south whilst route 17 goes north.  The desert is a popular trip out from Phoenix but make sure you have a phone, tell someone your plans and take plenty of water. The historic town of Flagstaff is north of Phoenix and has cooler weather whilst Sedona is a longer but nice trip up north.

Where to Stay in Phoenix
The America’s Best Value Inn in Phoenix is just that; very comfortable and only R550 a night. The Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs is more luxurious but still only R800 a night.

What you Mustn’t Miss in Phoenix

• The Botanical Gardens. Before heading out to see them in the wild, take a look at the desert plants that are at home in the Botanical Gardens. The story of their survival techniques is quite amazing!
• The Heard and Pueblo Grande Museums. Whilst there are few signs of them today, the lives and history of the Native Americans are celebrated at these two fascinating museums.
• The Science Centre. The top attraction here is the planetarium and telescope for, deep in the desert, the view of the constellations is incredible.
• Play Golf. In the midst of a barren landscape, the abundance of water means that golf courses are common but try the Arizona Grand for a challenging golfing experience.
