Getting into Newark
Although Newark has a major airport serving New York, the only direct flights are to JFK from Johannesburg. The journey between the airport and Newark takes around an hour but it beats flying into Atlanta and connecting there. Of course, if you’re planning a stopover then Newark is a possibility from Heathrow, Amsterdam or Paris.

Getting Around Newark
Newark’s centre is bordered by the New Jersey Turnpike to the east and Garden State Parkway to the west. Routes 280 and 76 complete a box around the city from which many of the city’s roads extend. These also make getting out of Newark easy too.

Out and About
Many use Newark as a base for exploring New York, given its proximity to the New Jersey Turnpike and Manhattan. There’s a dinosaur theme park close by too as well as the opportunity to get to Liberty and Ellis Island using the subway and ferry whilst the beautiful Jersey Shore is close by.

Staying in Newark
The Penn Station Hilton is convenient for the sights and costs around R2000 a night whilst the Double Tree Hilton, also good for the city’s attractions, is slightly cheaper at R1700 a night.

What Should I see in Newark?

• Newark Museum. The city played a big part in the history of the US and the museum has a wide ranging exhibition of artefacts and fabulous photographs of its past.
• Thomas Edison Historic Park. The famous inventor had his workshop in Newark which is now a museum laid out as he left it. Totally absorbing.
• Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. A huge cathedral that hosts music concerts but which is also renowned for its architecture, windows and bells.
• Shopping. Newark is short of malls but makes up for it with boutiques. Try Ferry Street for the best selection.
