New York Mini Guide
How do I get to New York?
There are direct flights from Johannesburg to New York’s JFK Airport with South African Airways, giving you seamless access to the city. Once there, many take a yellow cab to their hotel or hire a car from the airport. Once out of the airport take the Expressway onto Belt Parkway which takes you east or west into the different boroughs of New York.
Getting Around New York
It’s a huge city built over a series of islands and peninsulas. The road system is good, if a little confusing with numbered blocks named west or east of Fifth Avenue. A good map is essential and despite the media portrayal of a gridlocked city, traffic runs well outside of peak times.
Getting out of New York
Head for Route 95, the New Jersey Turnpike. Almost every road you’ll need to take out of the city spurs off this so you can speedily head north, south or west from it.
What’s There to See out of New York?
There’s a lot to be recommended outside the city. In hot weather, try the white sandy beaches of Long Island or the 130 mile long Jersey Shore which starts south of the city. For walkers, the view from the Palisades, the cliffs that line the Hudson River, are spectacular too.
Hotels in New York
To be right in the thick of the action, try the Milford NYC Times Square. You’ve got the idea of where it is and for R1300 a night; it’s a good price too. Yotel in Times Square is also great for location and a very contemporary hotel with a super roof terrace.
Not to be Missed in New York
- Central Park. You can take a horse and carriage ride round it, cycle, run or just walk it but just do it for a refreshing alternative to New York street life.
- Statue of Liberty. This is New York’s iconic landmark and by taking the ferry to Liberty Island you’ll get great photo opportunities. Damaged by Hurricane Sandy, parts of the statue are currently inaccessible but it’s still a must see attraction.
- Times Square. Considered the centre of the city, it’s where all the big events take place including the countdown on New Year’s Eve. At other times it’s a bustling junction typical of the city.
- Ground Zero. This is where the Twin Towers stood and today is part construction site, part memorial for the thousands who were killed in the terrorist attack.
