  3. Chicago
Chicago; the home of Al Capone, great pizzas and of course blues music. The windy city is also a big city with a lot to keep you busy during your stay. You can choose to use the CTA transport system but whilst it seems it’s just about everywhere, you will still be better off with a Chicago hire car for getting swiftly and conveniently between the sights.

Chicago Mini Guide

How do I get to Chicago?
There are no direct routes from Africa but you have a number of choices. Either connect through Atlanta from Johannesburg or take a trip via Europe with Amsterdam, Paris or London Heathrow being good bets. Take route 90 from the airport southeast into Chicago; a journey of around half an hour.

Travelling Outside of the City
Interstate 94 takes you north to Wisconsin whilst routes 88 and 90 take you west to Rockford. Route 57 goes south into rural Illinois. Good places to visit include Springfield, the home and final resting place of Abraham Lincoln. The best beaches are at Indiana Dunes, a few hours’ drive away on route 90.

Places to Stay in Chicago
  • Try the Congress Plaza next to Millennium Park. It’s close to many of the sights and will cost you around R1300 a night. If you’re going to do the Magnificent Mile, stay at the Whitehall Hotel, only minutes away and at R1200 a night, quite a bargain.
  • Must See Sights in Chicago
  • Magnificent Mile Tour. Only a mile of Chicago’s streets yet it’ll take you a day and the evening to do it properly. Climb the city’s tallest and most famous buildings, eat in the best pizzerias and relax in the city’s parks. A great way to experience the city.
  • Lincoln Park Zoo. A great day out for the whole family and free of charge too! Penguins and apes are the favourites here.
  • Museum Campus. This is where all the best museums are found, close to each other. Try the Adler Planetarium first – it’s magical and then see Sue the tyrannosaurus at the Natural History Museum.
  • Sears Tower. America’s tallest building; take a trip up to the observation deck for an unmissable view of the city.
