Belfast has had a troubled past but has risen from the ashes to become a popular city break destination. It is Ireland’s second biggest city and covers a large area. With patchy public transport, almost all visitors to Belfast hire a car. This can be arranged easily by entering your details into our search engine from which we’ll find you the best deals in Belfast car hire with the lowest prices and top quality cars.

Belfast Mini Guide

Getting to Belfast
Belfast has two airports; City and International, City takes domestic flights from the UK whilst the International has mainly holiday charter flights. This means that travellers from South Africa will need to make a connection from Heathrow with Aer Lingus or BA.

Travelling Outside the City
Following the M2 then the A8, you’ll reach the Giant’s Causeway one of the world’s most spectacular natural sights. If you want a great day out at the seaside, try Bangor, around twenty minutes away and a traditional bucket and spade, fish and chips resort.

Places to Stay
Most Belfast hotels are the chain variety but they offer great value and a comfortable stay in the city. Ibis and Days Hotels are the cheapest, averaging around £40 a night whilst the Holiday Inn Express is a little more luxurious but around £15 a night more.

Must See Things in Belfast
  • Stormont Castle. This is the seat of the Irish assembly, the Northern Ireland government and a staggeringly huge complex. The drive to the door is over a mile and the grounds are widespread and beautifully tended. You can take a tour of the buildings or just wander the grounds.
  • Political Murals. Once hugely symbolic of the struggles and now considered urban political art, the murals painted on the walls of buildings in the Falls Road and Shankill Road are a poignant reminder of the city’s turbulent history.
  • Belfast Castle. Not so much of historical or architectural value but the castle has a fabulous view out over the city and as part of the Cave Hill Country Park there are great walks along the Ulster coast.
  • Belfast City Hall is a great visit and would look familiar to residents of Durban as it is the same design as their town hall. The guided tours are particularly informative.
