The UK has so many great things to see and do and collecting a UK hire car when you arrive is the best way to see a selection of what makes the country one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Pre-booking is essential if you’re to ensure your choice of vehicle is available when you arrive and we give you the option of collecting it at the airport when you arrive or in a city location once you’ve had some time to settle in.

UK Mini Guide

How to get to the UK
From South Africa there are direct flights from OR Tambo and Cape Town Airports to London Heathrow Terminal 2 where South African Airways operate to and from. You’ll need to get connecting flights from there to visit other parts of the UK. An alternative is to fly to Amsterdam or Paris and take a connection from there.

Getting Around the UK
There are many domestic flights but part of the joy of travelling through the UK is to see the changing scenery. Take a hire car for shorter distances and consider the train or plane for longer ones. The motorway system is good but try to avoid peak times, especially around the cities, when the roads can be gridlocked.

Best Times to Visit
Winter is fine for city breaks but can be wet and dreary. Late spring is a good time when the trees come into leaf and the countryside brightens. Summer can be a great time when you can sit outside and eat or drink at quaint old country inns. Autumn sees fabulous colours in the leaves before they fall and is a time of roasted chestnuts, bonfires and the inevitable countdown to Christmas.

Top Places to See in the UK
  • London. So much to see in the capital, it’s difficult to know where to start. Take in a show in the West End, ride the London Eye, see St Pauls Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace or dine in Chinatown to name but a very few.
  • Edinburgh. The Scottish capital and full of history and culture. Walk the Royal Mile, see the Military Tattoo or enjoy the Edinburgh Festival. End your stay with a picnic on King Arthur’s Seat and look down over the city from this extinct volcano.
  • The Lake District. In the northwest of England, this national park of huge lakes and dramatic mountains attracts walkers and has inspired writers and poets over the centuries.
  • The Scottish Highlands. If you think that the Lake District is dramatic, try the Highlands. Home of Scotch whisky, kilts and heather, there are fewer more spectacular places in Europe.
