More stately than its neighbour Dubai, Abu Dhabi car hire is the best way to find your way around the capital of the Emirates. The shopping and entertainment may be more low key but it makes a great alternative to brash Dubai.

Abu Dhabi Mini Guide

How do I get to Abu Dhabi?
Emirates fly there daily from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport giving easy access. You can also fly into Dubai airport and hire a car there to make the journey along the E111 to the city. If flying to Abu Dhabi, collect your hire car then follow the E10 or E20 Airport Road into the centre.

Getting Around Abu Dhabi
The city is at the tip of a peninsula and spreads across several islands. The E111 passes the city by and is intersected by the E30, E22 and E30. It’s very easy to use these main thoroughfares to access the different parts of the city.

Abu Dhabi Hotels
The five star Khalidiyah Hotel is currently on offer for R800 a night – a bargain if ever you saw one. The Jumeirah at Etihad Towers is also spectacular and will cost you R1500 a night.

What Mustn’t I Miss in Abu Dhabi
  • Corniche. It may be very hot but at sunset, head down to the fabulous promenade; the Corniche to enjoy the fresh sea breezes. You’ll be in great company for almost all the city meets there at some time or other.
  • The Flagpole. This may not sound exciting but it is one of the world’s tallest at 123m. There are rumours it may be replaced so as to be the tallest. Watch this space!
  • Khalifa Park. Whilst the city may be light of entertainment, especially for kids, the park has many attractions that will keep them happy for a day or two.
  • Yas Island. If you’re into motorsports, visit the home of the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix race on Yas Island. It’s a fabulous circuit complete with a state of the art visitor centre.
