Switzerland is a magical and very efficient country and a favourite European holiday destination. Hiring a car in Switzerland is a great idea, especially as much of its attraction is outside the big cities.

Switzerland Mini Guide

Getting in to Switzerland
The only direct flights from South Africa are from Johannesburg and Cape Town, both of which have flights to Zurich although Edelweiss’ flight from Cape Town is only seasonal. Other options are to fly to a European hub such as Frankfurt or Heathrow and continue your journey from there.

Travelling Around Switzerland
The country isn’t huge so there are no internal flights. Car hire is a sensible way of getting around as it allows you to enjoy the views available at almost every turn. The road system is good and even in winter the roads are cleared regularly of snow.

Eating in Switzerland
The menu is distinct in each region with French, Italian or German influences. Fondue, made with melted Gruyere cheese is very popular and Swiss wine to wash it down is improving in quality.

Staying in Switzerland
Accommodation isn’t cheap in this expensive country and you can expect to pay around R1800 upwards for good quality accommodation. There are a number of aparthotels which are cheaper but even then you’ll pay from R1200 upwards.

What are the Highlights of Switzerland?
  • Chocolate. Many of the cities have their own specialist chocolate makers so after trying out favourites such as Tobler and Lindt, you can also taste some bespoke confectionery in Geneva, Zurich and other cities.
  • Geneva. This great city on the border with France is the headquarters of many of the world’s organisations including the UN and the International Red Cross. It also has the instantly recognisable Jet d’Eau – great for cooling off in the hot summers.
  • Skiing. Some of the most exclusive ski resorts of the world are found in Switzerland. If you have the money, rub shoulders with the rich and famous at Gstaad or St Moritz.
  • Mountains. Not just for skiing but for hiking and photography, the country enjoys the Swiss Alps as well as other minor mountain chains, all of which offer great scenery whether walked or enjoyed from the comfort of a hire car.
