Getting to Valencia
London, Zurich, Amsterdam and Paris are the only airports you can fly to from South Africa with connections on to Valencia. The airport is just outside the ring road and by driving down the E-901, you’ll find yourself right in the centre.
Travelling Around Valencia
The V-30 motorway encircles the city with several spur roads leading into the south, centre and north of Valencia. You’ll find the centre busy so perhaps park up and walk around the historic city.
Out and About
Albufera is an interesting region that produces rice alongside the freshwater lake. The lake is also home to many migratory birds in spring and autumn. El Palmar the closest village is renowned for its paella made with the local rice.
Bunol is not far away and famous for La Tomatina, the tomato festival which sees the whole town covered in tomato pulp.
Hotels in Valencia
The city centre Valenciaflats are very modern and upmarket but still only cost R900 a night. The boutique hotel Abba Acteon is close to the City of Arts and Science and a great room here costs only R800 a night.
What Must I do in Valencia?
- Try paella, the traditional dish of Valencia. There are many different versions so it’s worth exploring but once you’ve tried it, you’ll be addicted.
- The City of Arts and Science is a futuristic looking complex designed by the famous architect, Calatrava. Once you’ve got beyond ogling the buildings, their contents will also impress.
- The Silk Exchange is a UNESCO protected building and has been beautifully restored. Most people come to look at the gargoyles which adorn it and which are quite rude in places.
- Lladro porcelain is made in Valencia and whilst not to everyone’s taste, those who are interested can tour the factory and buy discount pieces afterwards.
