Getting to Gran Canaria
You’ll need to take a holiday or budget flight from a European hub airport but there are plenty to choose from. No South African flights go to Spain so it’ll have to be London, Paris, Zurich, Amsterdam or Frankfurt. The airport is on the west coast, close to the island’s second biggest city of Telde. You’ll need to use the main road that follows the coast to get to your destination.

Getting Around the Island
The coast roads, GC-1 and GC-2 are the main ways of getting around and are moderately busy, especially around Las Palmas. Off this road, several head towards the mountainous centre and become progressively quieter.

Out and About
Boat trips are popular for watching dolphins and sometimes whales. You’ll get them from any of the major port towns. You can island hop to anywhere in the Canaries with airline Naysa or even get a ferry to Spain. Some operators offer trips over to Morocco for something very different.

Hotels on Gran Canaria
We like the very modern four star AC Hotel Iberia, part of the Marriott chain and only R900 a night. The three star and quite basic Hotel Verol is close to the beach and only R500 a night.

Must see Places on Gran Canaria

• You’ve got to see the sand dunes of Maspalomas. They’re the most extensive in Europe and because of their beauty and expanse, have been used in many films as a stand in for Arabia.
• Palmitos Park will be where the kids want to go. It’s a great animal park with plenty of shows to entertain. Allow a whole morning or afternoon for your visit.
• Valsequillo, on the mountain road west of Telde, is a taste of traditional Gran Canaria with beautiful scenery, old houses and a way of life that includes cheese making and viticulture.
• The mountains are spectacular and one look at the map will show you the hairpin bends – lots of them. It’s a complete contrast to the coast and a must do!
