Getting to Fuerteventura
Despite being one of the smaller Canary Islands there are plenty of flights from the major European hubs with connections to South Africa. None of them are on the direct route to the island but it gives you a chance to enjoy a city break if you wish. The airport is just south of Puerto del Rosario on the FV-2 highway and you’ll be there in a hire car in under ten minutes.

Getting Around Fuerteventura
The FV-2 and FV-3 skirt the southern and eastern coasts with only minor roads leading off these to the west. You can get to any of the beaches and resorts of the east very quickly but travel up into the mountains is much slower.

Out and About
You’ll find boat trips to go and see the whales and dolphins but a great trip is to take the ferry from Coralejo to Isla de Los Lobos which has been uninhabited for thirty years and is now a naturalist’s heaven. Miles of trails crisscross the island which takes around three hours to circumnavigate.

Hotels in Fuerteventura
The Sheraton Fuerteventura Resort and Spa is the top hotel on the island but will cost you around R2500 a night for the pleasure. Half the price is the Barcelo Jandia Mar but it’s still a great place to stay.

What Shouldn’t I Miss on Fuerteventura?

• There’s quite a lot of interest to tourists on this small Canary island.
• The beaches are said to be amongst the best in the world and have won numerous travel awards.
• The island is volcanic and as such has areas of weird and wonderful rock formations. Head inland and up and don’t forget your camera.
• The Sand Dune National Park is great fun to explore. It’s right by the sea so you can cool off if you get to hot but it’s such fun trying to race up sand dunes then roll down the other side.
• Surfing is popular off the island. Fuerteventura means ‘strong wind’ and this whips up the sea into huge breakers in places or leaves the water perfect for windsurfing in others.
