Bilbao Mini Guide
Getting to Bilbao
There are plenty of flights from the main European hubs into Bilbao including London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam so, despite there being no direct flights from South Africa, getting to Bilbao won’t be a problem. The airport is north of the city and accessed via the Avenida Bilbao Errepidea, a journey of around fifteen minutes.
Navigating the City
The city stretches out along the river and this is a good focal point for getting your bearings. There are a number of main roads that snake in and out of the city but we’d recommend asking for a sat-nav as the road system isn’t easy.
Out of Bilbao
Not far away is the tragic town of Guernica, bombed during the Spanish Civil War, an event remembered in the art of Picasso. Also an easy day trip is the beautiful city of San Sebastian with its renowned city beach.
Hotels in Bilbao
Try the Silken Gran Hotel, opposite the Guggenheim. It’s a very classy hotel and costs R1900 a night for a stay. The Abando in central Bilbao is very nice but it’s half the price of the Silken Gran and much more convenient for the central sights.
Top Bilbao Experiences
- The Guggenheim Museum is the European branch of the famous art experience and is set in a building that’s as breath-taking as its contents.
- For more great art try the Museo de Bellas Artes which has over six thousand exhibits and many of them masterpieces by Spain’s greatest artists.
- The Basque Museum is a fascinating experience too. We only hear on the news about the Basque country and its troubles. The museum puts it all into perspective.
- The city is renowned for bullfighting and if you want to know more about it, try the Bullfighting Museum for an insight into the traditional sport.
