Getting to Alicante
All the major European hub airports with flights from South Africa have onward flights to Alicante so just choose the most convenient or cheapest. The airport is southwest of the city and best reached by heading to the coast from the airport then taking the Avenida Elche into the centre.

Around Alicante
The A-70 and A-31 form a circular around the inner city and within this the streets form concentric rings. The streets are narrow in this part and can get choked so it’s often a better idea to park outside the circular and walk in.

Days out From Alicante
The Canalobre Caves are spectacular and only forty minutes north of the city. The main chamber is as large as the inside of a cathedral and spectacularly adorned with stalactites and stalagmites.

Hotels in Alicante
For cheap and cheerful, try the Estudiotel at R680 a night. It’s fine if you’re not looking for luxury and plenty of facilities. At the other end of the scale is the five star Hospes Amerigo which has everything you might need and is centrally located. You will pay R2700 for the privilege though.

Not to be Missed in Alicante

• Even if you don’t go into the castle, the view from the top of Mount Benacantil is something else. You can see for miles along the coast in either direction and down onto the city
• Get free entry to the Castle of Santa Barbara and enjoy the largest medieval castle in Spain, built by the Moors, 1200 years ago.
• San Juan beach is seven kilometres long and reached by a short car journey out of the city. It is often voted as the best beach in Spain and so should be on your list.
• The Archaeological Museum can sound a bit dry but it’s not at all. There is hands on material, multimedia shows and plenty of people on hand to explain the pieces which date back 2,500 years.
