Pretoria is an attractive city, originally founded in 1855 and named as Pretoria Philadelphia; Pretoria of Brotherly Love. It’s unusual in having nearly every road planted with Jacaranda trees which has led to it being called the Jacaranda City.
Pretoria Mini Guide
Getting There
The nearest airport is
OR Tambo in Johannesburg, still quite a distance away. Thankfully, Greyhound coaches make the journey each day and you can also get the train directly from
Johannesburg into Pretoria. You might consider hiring a car at the airport but we’d recommend going by public transport then hiring one in Pretoria.
Don’t Miss
The key sight in Pretoria is the Voortrekker Monument on Proclamation Hill. Visible from almost everywhere in the city it gives a great view out over Pretoria. The authorities have now installed a small museum nearby that tells the story of the Voortrekkers who made it this far north to found the city. The National Cultural Museum is worth a visit too where the exhibits tell you much of the history of the country that is less well known. There, you’ll find out about the tribes that ruled the parts of the country whilst other nomadic tribes spent life on the road.
Experience
Have you ever thought about what it would be like to camp out in a zoo? Well at the National Zoological Gardens you can do just that at the weekends. Bring your own tent or hire one and go to sleep with the sound of wild animals around, safe in the knowledge that they can’t get to you.
Out and About
Haartbeespoort Dam is spectacular at any time but add in the thrill of drifting silently over it at dawn in a hot air balloon and it becomes magical. You’ll float through the ethereal mists as the sun rises and see the warm glow of the sun’s rays on the dam walls and spreading across the attractive countryside. If you like old steam trains then you’ll love the Friends of the Rail experience where you can choose between circling the city on a steam train or head out to Cullinan, where the world’s largest and most famous diamond was discovered.
Eating Out
There’s no food specific to Pretoria but it does have more than its fair share of top restaurants serving excellent South African and international cuisine. Top of most people’s lists are Cynthia’s Indigo Moon and Pasha’s, quite expensive but well worth it.
Shopping
Many people come to Pretoria for its shopping which is top class and available through several malls in the city. Choose one with added entertainment and you could shop, eat and watch a film or ice skate before returning home.
