How do I get to Pisa?
There are no direct flights to Italy from South Africa so choose a hub airport such as Paris, London or Amsterdam and get a budget flight to Pisa Airport. From the UK, Ryanair offer the best deals. The airport is just south of the city and by joining the Strada Statale I Aurelia you’ll be in the city centre in no time.

Getting Around Pisa
The city is not huge and its intricate network of streets means it’s often better to park outside then walk around.

What’s Outside the City?
South of the city is the coastal resort of Livorno and north, the seaside city of Viareggio. Two roads run inland from Pisa to the equally beautiful city of Florence.

Hotels in Pisa
Rather unusual is the bed and breakfast called 23, right in the pedestrian part of the city. It’s in a beautiful historic building and costs R1300 a night. Cheaper is the Hotel Villa Primavera within walking distance of the Field of Miracles and only R700 a night.

What Should I See in Pisa?

• The Leaning Tower. This is an obvious one being the unmistakable icon of the city. Book your tickets in advance for entry numbers are restricted.
• The Field of Miracles. This is the campus on which most of the famous buildings of Pisa are built. Apart from the tower, visit the Duomo which has so much to admire.
• The Botanical Garden. This is part of the University of Pisa, the oldest university in the western world. The gardens are beautiful and if you’ve had enough of touring the sights, take a break in the peace of the garden.
• San Giuliano Terme. The city is also famous for its thermal spas and of them, the San Giuliano is the most popular. The waters there are a constant 38 – 40C.
