How do I get to Palermo?
You won’t find a direct flight to Palermo from South Africa but plenty of the European hub airports fly there. Closest hub airports to Palermo are Zurich and Frankfurt but the other hubs make for interesting stopovers. The airport is some way away along the north coast but with a Palermo Airport hire car it’s only a thirty minute journey along the E90.

Getting Around Palermo
The E90 bypasses the city whilst the SS113 forms a spur off it into the city. Roads cross between the two, making it easy to navigate.

Out of Palermo
The road system is such that Trapani, Catania and Messina are all easy to get to by roads that spoke out from the city. The motorways are quiet but take a drive on the smaller roads for more traditional Sicily.

What can Palermo Offer?

• Palermo Cathedral. This is a beautiful, Spanish inspired edifice which contains the tomb of the German son of Barbarossa who died on campaign here.
• The Cappuccini Catacombs. Not for the squeamish for the catacombs contain the preserved bodies and skeletons of over 8,000 residents in varying states of decay.
• The Gesu Church. For students of architecture, this is a prime example of the unique Sicilian baroque style which parted from the mainland baroque in the 16th century.
• The markets. Shopping is good in Palermo anywhere but for bargains and people watching, try the Piazza del Carmine which has almost everything you could ever need.
