Getting to Milan
Despite having three airports serving this big city, no flights arrive from South Africa. You’ll have to get a flight to a European hub and then continue from there. It depends on where you connect whether you use Malpensa, Orio al Serio or Linate Airports. They vary in distance and accessibility from the city centre and the further out you arrive, the cheaper the flights are likely to be.

Getting Around Milan
There’s an outer ring road formed by the motorways A4, A50 and A51 plus an inner ring road. Traffic is chaotic in the city so plan your route carefully or ask for a sat-nav.

Getting out of Milan
Historic Bergamo and Brescia are a couple of hours to the east whilst Lake Maggiore is two hours north. Milan is often used as a skiing airport with the resorts of the Dolomites and Austrian Tyrol accessible from the city.

What Should I do in Milan?

• Take in a football match. With two world class football teams in AC and Inter, you’ll be spoiled for choice but will get to see a lot of sporting passion.
• Shopping. Milan is the centre of the Italian fashion industry and whether you catch a cat walk show or just browse the designer boutiques, clothes horses will be in their element.
• Visit the Duomo. This is Milan’s astonishing cathedral and well worth a visit. Built in the 14th century from white marble, take a trip up onto its roof to get unrivalled views of the city.
• The Castello Sforzesco. This is the stately home of the Sforza family which ruled renaissance Milan. Carefully restored and set in fabulous gardens, it’s a nice afternoon’s jaunt.
• Opera at La Scala
• The Milan Opera House, La Scala is one of the most famous in the world and has seen performances from almost all the world’s top opera stars. Tickets are like gold dust but if you get one, it’s a wonderful experience.
