How do I get to Catania?
Fly into one of the main European hubs to catch an onward flight to Catania. Zurich and Frankfurt are the nearest but London, Paris or Dubai offer interesting alternatives. The airport is almost in the city centre, just south in fact. Head north on any of the small roads from the airport and you’ll end up in the old town.

Getting Around Catania
Set out in a grid pattern between the sea and the A18, it’s hard to get lost in Catania.

Out and About
Mount Etna is surrounded by a vast volcanic park so, as well as seeing the 10,000ft volcano, explore the eerie landscape too. Head out to the coast to see the pretty towns of Acicastella and Acitrezza.

The EH13 styles itself as luxury bed and breakfast accommodation and it is that. The best thing is the price at only R1000 a night. Bizarrely, the luxury Sheraton Catania Hotel is even cheaper at R800 a night and you get great views of the sea and Etna.

What Shouldn’t I Miss in Catania?

• Mount Etna. A spectacular volcano and the biggest in Europe, heed local warnings as it has become more active in the last year.
• The Fish Market. Thought of as probably the best fish market in the world by top chefs, it is a cornucopia of everything marine and so, so fresh.
• The Piazza del Duomo. Cathedral Square in other words and as well as housing the imposing cathedral, it has the elephant fountain demonstrating the symbol of the city.
• The Villa. Not so much a villa but more a huge park which has just reopened after considerable renovations. It’s now very neat and beautifully laid out.
