How do I get to Bologna?
You can’t fly there directly as there are no flights to Italy from South Africa. Instead, why not try a few days stopover in Paris or London before catching a connection to Bologna? From the airport, join the A14 before turning off onto the SS19 which takes you straight into Bologna.

Getting Around the City
Being a medieval city, the roads can be narrow and often blocked. A lot of patience is needed but driving slowly allows you to really appreciate Bologna.

Out of Bologna
Historic Florence is an hour down the A1 whilst Modena, home of Pavarotti, Parmesan, Lambrusco and tortellini is under an hour northwest on the same road. The A14 southeast leads you to Forli, another historic and picturesque city.

Staying in Bologna
The Antica Residenza D’Azeglio is a traditionally furnished old hotel close to the city centre. It’s very reasonably priced for its facilities and position at R1250 a night. The Suite Hotel Elite is very modern and a little further out of the city but is half the price for a night’s stay.

What Shouldn’t I Miss in Bologna?

• The food. Rated as one of the gastronomic centres of Europe, a combination of locally produced delicacies transformed by some of the world’s top chefs using traditional local recipes makes this a foodies’ heaven.
• The old town. Beautiful honey coloured buildings topped with terracotta roofs have led travel writers to declare Bologna prettier than Florence. What will you think?
• Walk the Portici. When the heat of the sun gets too much, use the Portici or covered galleries to get around the city. There’s 25 miles of them!
• The Palazzo Pepoli. This houses the museum of Bologna and is where you’ll find out all about the city and its history.
