For now you can connect at Frankfurt from Johannesburg but this route ends in September. Then, you’ll have to fly to London before getting the Ryanair flight from Stansted to Bergamo. The A4 crosses east to west through the city and then branches southeast at Milan on the A1 and southwest at Brescia on the A21. From these roads many places are accessible. Note that because the Alps form a boundary north of the city, little traffic heads north from Bergamo.

The NH Orio al Serio is only ten minutes’ walk from the airport and a lovely place to relax before setting off in your hire car. Expect to pay around R1000 a night for a room.

What can I see Around Bergamo Airport?

• You’re not far from Lake Garda, the beautiful and romantic Italian lake and even closer to the lesser known but almost as pretty Lake Iseo.
• Bergamo itself is breath-taking and you’ll love walking around the Piazza Vecchia with its stunning medieval architecture. The palace of the rulers of Venice overlooks the square and you can have a photo taken by the Contarini Fountain.
• The composer Donizetti was born in the city and the theatre named after him stages many of his operas.
• Head for the village of San Vigilio, just outside Bergamo and enjoy the timeless atmosphere of the village.
