Getting to Tegel Airport
Although it’s Germany’s second busiest airport there are no flights from South Africa so, once more, you’re going to need to look at hub airports to make a connection. Heathrow, Amsterdam and Paris are all good choices depending on price and flight times.

What are the Facilities Like?
Facilities are very good and you should find everything you need conveniently to hand. There have been no recent upgrades to the airport as it is due to be replaced by the new Brandenburg Airport so as time progresses it will begin to look more tired. Still, there are plenty of shops and places to eat as well as currency exchange facilities and a post office.

Getting Away From the Airport
The airport is alongside autobahn 111 and the E26 which pass west of Berlin. Northwest of the airport, autobahn 24 heads to Hamburg.

Staying Nearby
If you want a break before continuing your journey, the closest hotel is the Mercure which is a mile and a half away in Spandau. A night there will cost you R1200.

• Oranienburg, north of the airport was the site of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp used by both the Germans and subsequently by the Russians. Today it remains as a memorial to those killed there.
• Brandenburg to the west is the heart of the former country of Prussia and the cities and towns have museums which detail this forgotten state.
• Poland. To the east, several hours drive later you’ll reach the Polish border and can enjoy a different culture and food.
