Stuttgart Mini Guide

How do I get to Stuttgart?
The easiest way bearing in mind that there are no direct flights from South Africa, is to fly into Frankfurt. You can either hire a car there and drive to Stuttgart, a journey of around four hours or you can take the short hop to Stuttgart by plane with Lufthansa. The airport lies along Autobahn 8 from which you take autoroute 27 north to the city centre.

Getting Around Stuttgart
The roads into Stuttgart and around the city are a little chaotic and you may want to ask us to include a sat-nav with your hire car so you don’t get lost.

Getting out of Stuttgart
Mannheim is an interesting city under an hour from Stuttgart. Wine making is an important industry in the region and you can tour the vineyards with your hire car.

Staying in Stuttgart
The Hotel Azenberg is really nice and has an indoor swimming pool. Nights there cost from R1600 a night. For a little more you can have five star luxury at the Steigenberger Graf Zeppelin.

Highlights of Stuttgart
  • Mercedes Benz Factory. Petrol heads amongst visitors to the city can take a tour of the factory and afterwards wander around the museum where you’ll see cars from the entire history of the company.
  • Porsche Museum. You may have had enough with the Mercedes factory but spare a little time for the king of sports cars. Not just cars here but also exhibits of the technology that has taken Porsche to the top of its game.
  • Wilhelma Zoo. After being dragged around the cars for a while, the family will appreciate an afternoon at this charming zoo set in the grounds of a beautiful palace.
  • Planetarium.  Germany is renowned for making high quality lenses and the Carl Zeiss lenses used in the planetarium’s equipment give a stunning view of the heavens.
