How do I get to Hamburg?
Hamburg has its own very busy airport but still no flights from South Africa. As so often, you’ll need to choose a European hub such as London, Paris or Amsterdam and fly on from there. The airport is a good way north of the city but take autoroute 433 south and you’ll soon be in the city centre.

Get Around Hamburg
The city is built on two banks of the Elbe making the river a good focal point for directions. Elsewhere, extensive post-war road rebuilding has given the city an easy to navigate road system.

Getting out of Hamburg
The UNESCO city of Lubeck is very interesting as is the island called Helgoland, off the north coast. Kiel is not far away, famous for the canal amongst other industrial sights.

Staying in Hamburg
We love the Hotel Fairmont Vier but at R7000 a night it’s beyond many people. The Europaischer Hof at R1500 is more popular with budget tourists but is ideally located in the heart of the city.

Top Sights in Hamburg

• The churches. The city centre has five main churches which are worth a visit with St Jacobi and St Petri the two which should be top of your list.
• Rathaus. The city hall is impressive too with a tower that stretches nearly 400ft into the Hamburg sky. Time your visit right and you can get a guided tour.
• Hamburg Dungeon. A ‘themed’ exhibition, it’s great fun for those who aren’t squeamish, showing the darker side of the city’s history.
• The Beaches. You wouldn’t have equated Hamburg with beach holidays but take the ferry to Neumuhlen for a great day out on soft white sand or try the island of Helgoland for more of the same.
