How do I get to Berlin?
With the ongoing problems with the new Brandenburg Airport, getting to Berlin is a little messy at the moment. There are no flights from South Africa although the new airport, when open, is likely to have them. Instead, for now fly to Heathrow, Paris or Amsterdam and connect there, maybe staying over for a few nights. Autobahn 111 takes you south before using route 2 to take you east into the city centre.

Getting Around Berlin
Its history means that many of the roads are confusing but routes 2 and 96 run north/south through the city. You’ll need a good map or ask us to add in a sat-nav for your hire period.

Out of the City
Visit the palaces of the UNESCO Heritage park of Sanssouci in nearby Potsdam. For a relaxing time in natural surroundings, try the protected region of Spreewald with its clear streams, forests and waterways.

Staying in Berlin
If you want luxury, try the Hotel de Rome where you’ll be treated like royalty but will need a royal fortune as it’s R4800 a night. The Winters Hotel is a lot cheaper at R1650 a night but is still a great little find!

Top Berlin Attractions

• The Museums. There are dozens of them and you can get a pass that entitles you to access for a much reduced price. The best in our view is the Stasi Museum which opens the lid on the East German secret police.
• The Brandenburg Gate. Hugely symbolic and very photogenic, it appears on almost all city postcards. Watch out for busy traffic there though!
• The Berlin Wall. Even though it came down in 1989, the wall is still there in places as a reminder of the division of the city. In parts dark and atmospheric, in others celebratory of change and freedom, it’s a must see.
• The New Bundestag. Remodelled after the fall of the wall in readiness for its position as the parliament building for the new Germany, it’s a stunning building with fabulous views from the observation deck.
