Germany Mini Guide

Getting to Germany
There is only one direct route to Germany and that’s to Frankfurt. Two airlines cover the route; Lufthansa and South African Airways. There are internal flights between more distant locations otherwise you’ll need to use a connecting flight to Paris, Amsterdam or London although for some, a direct flight into Zurich is useful for accessing Southern Germany.

Getting Around Germany
The autobahn network is excellent and covers much of the country. There is no speed limit on the autobahn in principle although in busy parts you are limited to 81 mph. Elsewhere, as long as you are deemed in control of your car you can drive as fast as you like.

Eating and Drinking in Germany
German food can be quite heavy and rich in protein such as meat. Sausage is a popular ingredient and vegetables tend to be to root kind. Meals are often accompanied by beer but German wine has improved steadily over the years.

Hotels in Germany.
Hotels in the country are usually of an excellent standard and follow the international star rating. Prices vary but are not generally expensive. You can get a room in a budget chain hotel for around R800 a night with mid-range hotels costing double that.

Highlights of Germany
  • Berlin. The new and old capital, there is so much history here, much of it relating to the fall of the wall. Stunning architecture abounds and you can enjoy some of the most exuberant nightlife in Europe.
  • Munich. Another famous city and home to BMW cars. The Oktoberfest is world renowned and just being there is a great excuse to join in the party.
  • The Black Forest. Covering a large part of Southern Germany, this is the legendary home of the chocolate, cream and cherry cake and the setting for many fairy tales.
  • Frankfurt. Europe’s own Manhattan, the city’s skyline is a photographer’s dream and the wealth created in one of Europe’s top financial centres means that there are plenty of cultural attractions too.
