Getting to Paris
It’s a simple direct flight from Johannesburg to Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport with Air France, the only operator. You may want to consider a flight to Heathrow followed by a budget hop across the channel, depending on cost and flight times. The airport is around thirty minutes from the city centre which is reachable quickly and easily by hire car along the E15 motorway.

Getting Around the City
Paris has the Route Peripherique, an inner ring road that circles the old city with the A86 forming an outer motorway ring road. The Peripherique is very useful but it’s often driven at speed and with exits that come up on you quickly, especially if you’re in the fast lane. Consider a sat-nav for safety and convenience.

Getting out of the City
Being the capital, there are many motorways that lead you to the different regions of France although most of them are toll roads. Outside the city, visit Giverny, the home of Claude Monet and where his water lily paintings were completed. Also consider the cathedral cities of Reims and Rouen, both just over an hour from the capital.

Staying in Paris
For good value we like the Belambra City at R750 a night. It’s just out of the centre but close to a metro station. Ibis hotels are found all over the city and average around R1000 a night in large comfortable rooms.

You Have Just got to see…

• The Eiffel Tower. The icon, par excellence of the city and at one point, the tallest structure in Europe. Take the elevator up to the viewing platform or dine in one of the tower’s restaurants.
• Palace of Versailles. Once home of the French monarchy and now simply a beautiful chateau with fabulous formal gardens. It should be on everyone’s list.
• Louvre Art Gallery. One of the most famous galleries in the world which includes the famous Mona Lisa painting amongst other priceless works of art.
• Musee d’Orsay. This is the world’s premier museum for impressionist art and in particular that of Claude Monet. If you love impressionism then this is a must see for you.
• Notre Dame. The home of the hunchback and another of the city's icons. It's played a huge part in the city's history.
