Getting to Nice
You won’t be able to fly directly to Nice from South Africa and the temptation is to fly into Paris, a good idea if you want to spend a few days in the capital but a quicker route is via Zurich or Frankfurt. The airport is less than three miles along the coast and the 6098 coastal motorway takes you straight into the centre.

Getting around Nice
Autoroute A8 runs parallel to the coast but about two miles inland. In the city itself, follow the coastal road to keep your bearings. Other main roads travel between the two.

Getting out of Nice
Follow the coast road for great views and to visit Cannes and Antibes as well as smaller resorts such as St Juan Les Pins. To head inland, follow the coast road down to St Laurent du Var and head north from there on the M6202 towards Grenoble.

Places to Stay in Nice
In a prime location on the promenade, the Radisson Blu is an exceptional hotel with unrivalled views. It will cost you around R3000 a night though! Just under a kilometre from the old port is the Ibis Palais des Congres, much more affordable at R1200 a night.

What Should I do in the City?

• Walk the Promenade des Anglais. Designed by an Englishman who loved to stroll beside the Mediterranean, the promenade is a great way to spend the early evening people watching.
• Visit the museums. There are a number of museums and art galleries in the city, most of which are free to enter. The best ones are those dedicated to the artists Chagall and Matisse.
• Have a drink at a pavement café. Nowhere in France is the climate so perfect for whiling away an afternoon that in Nice. Get a coffee and some delicious patisserie and just relax.
• Take in the view from Castle Hill. Actually called the Colline du Chateau, the castle is almost non-existent these days but the view over the city is magnificent.
