How do I get to Nantes?
It’s not easy with no direct flights from South Africa but if you fly to either Paris Charles de Gaulle or to Amsterdam, you can make a connection there for the city. The airport is southwest of the city so join the Peripherique heading north before turning east on the Rue de Pornic which takes you down to the centre via a bridge over the Loire.

Getting Around Nantes
The city is compact and is encircled by the Peripherique which means access to all parts is easy.

Out of Nantes
The temptation is to head off east along the Loire, trying the wine and visiting the chateaux but spare some time for a trip west to Saint Nazaire and enjoy a little of seaside France.

Where Should I Stay in Nantes?
Hotels are very pricey in the city with around R2200 being the average for anything decent. For R3300 the Campanile is a great hotel, close to the centre but for something the chain Quality Hotel and Suites will do you a room for around R2000 a night.

What Should I see Around Nantes?

• Shop at Talensac Market. The market is renowned throughout this part of France and with good reason. You could easily lose yourself in a day’s shopping here.
• Place du Commerce. More of a focal point for the city, you’ll find great shopping off one part; fantastic bars and clubs off another.
• Ile de Versailles. It’s a small island in the Loire that has been lovingly converted into a Japanese garden and is open for all to visit.
• The Cathedrale St Pierre. More imposing than perhaps the city warrants, the cathedral has a lot of interesting nooks and crannies including two crypts.
