Marseille is one of the oldest cities in Europe and also one of the most culturally diverse. It cries out to be explored and the only way to do it properly is by pre-booking a Marseille hire car.

Marseille Mini Guide

Getting to Marseille
The city has its own airport but no direct flights from South Africa. You can access it through the main European hub airports though. We’d recommend choosing based on combined price and flight times. The airport is five miles northwest of the city but reached easily along the E714.

Getting Around the City
Marseille is the largest French city by area and a hire car is the best way of getting around. It’s very spread out with the A7 and A50 motorways providing the backbone of the road system. You may want to consider asking for a sat-nav with your hire car if you’re not confident of the roads.

Getting out of Marseille
The best beaches are at Cassis, a small resort east of the city. For more history, take the E712 north to Aix-en-Provence.

Hotels in Marseille
Functional but very cheap is the Appart’City Euromed which will cost you only R500 a night. For more luxury without breaking the bank try the Ibis Styles Marseille Timone for R750.

You Must Visit…
  • Noailles Market. The biggest in the city, if you didn’t know better you’d think you were in Africa and it has a huge range of unusual goods for sale.
  • Panier. This is the oldest part of the city and where immigrants were first housed. There are plenty of old buildings plus museums to tell you the story so put aside a morning for a look.
  • Vieux Port. This is the old port just along from the modern container one and still carries on the traditional activities that has kept it busy for centuries. There’s loads to see and a few cafés where you can get a refreshing drink.
  • The Corniche. This is an elegant seaside promenade which has cooling breezes and a great view back over the city. It’s popular with the city inhabitants in the evenings when it really comes to life.
