The city is more than just about wine and you’ll find a hire car the best way to go about finding out what else Bordeaux has to offer which includes museums, entertainment and gardens.

Bordeaux Mini Guide

Getting Around Bordeaux
There’s an inner ring road too formed by the E70 and the Rues Godard and Albert I. Within this you’ll find most of interest in the city and all easily accessed by car.

Out of the City
Of course there are the vineyards of some of the great names in winemaking; Medoc, St Emilion and Sauternes. All of them are splendid and you’ll get to try some of the best wines in the world.

Hotels in Bordeaux
We like the Citotel le Chantry, almost right in the centre, very nice rooms with all the facilities you need and for only R800 a night.

How do I get to Bordeaux?
There’s no chance of flying there directly from South Africa and so you’ll have to use a European hub airport. If tight for time, try flying into Zurich or Frankfurt first but if you want a great few days stopover, use Paris, Amsterdam or London. The airport is to the west of the outer ring road, the E5, which you can join by following the N563.

Hot Spots in Bordeaux
  • Les Quais. Formerly a rundown port area, a relic of the wine trade, Les Quais have been remodelled and revamped to form a very modern and stylish entertainment area with the best clubs and bars.
  • The Water Mirror. This is a little strange but still fascinating. Alternating between misty concealment and having just two centimetres of water in the small pool, you’ll see perfect reflections of whatever surrounds the pool.
  • The Wine Museum. You can’t visit Bordeaux and not see the wine museum. Telling the history of the wine production industry in the region, you’ll finish off with a glass of the region’s top export.
  • Football. FC Bordeaux is one of the top teams in France and if you can get a ticket to a game, it’ll be a whole lot different to what you are used to, especially if they are playing local rivals Marseille.
