Gaborone is the capital city of Botswana and a very pleasant one at that. It’s a little spread out meaning that Gaborone car hire is a good idea, especially when compared to public transport. It may seem daunting to arrange car hire in Gaborone but by using our quick pre-booking system, you’ll get the best prices on top quality cars as well as shortening the time you’ll have to wait to collect yours.

Gaborone Mini Guide

How do I get to Gaborone?
There are flights from OR Tambo and Lanseria to Gaborone Airport with South African Express and Air Botswana whilst the latter also has a flight from Cape Town.  Once at the airport, it’s a quick journey down the airport road onto the city’s main artery the A1.

Travelling Around Gaborone
The A1 is the main road through the city and all other roads spur off it. You’ll find no set pattern to the roads which often loop around back to the A1. Signage is adequate and people are often happy to help a tourist who’s lost. 4x4 rental in Gaborone is a good idea as the roads are not always in the best condition.

Getting out of Gaborone
Take the A1 out of Gaborone, and after 35 minutes, you’ll reach Otse village. Apart from the majestic condors there, you’ll be entranced by the traditional stories told about the village and be met heartily by the village folk. Gaborone Game Reserve is nearby and a small and friendly one too. It’s growing in size but is still mainly birds; unusual for a game reserve.

Where to Stay in Gaborone
The Peermont chain offer three hotels of varying standards in the city and they range from R600 to R1200 a night. The mid-range Mondior gets the best reviews.

Not to be Missed in Gaborone
  • Kgale Hill. Whilst more of a mound than a hill, you’ll get a great view out over the city from this, one of the country’s few pieces of high ground. It’s not safe at night or at quieter times of day.
  • Mokolodi. At this game reserve you’ll be able to pet a baby cheetah, one of the few places you can. The reserve also acts as carers for orphaned cheetah cubs.
  • Shopping. If you want some typical Botswana articles, the many malls around the city abound with items ideal as gifts or souvenirs.
  • Sport. The city has its own mountain biking club and visitors are welcome to join. It’s a gruelling but friendly outing if you’re fit and ready for adventure.
