*daily rates in Darwin based on a 1 day rental (24hr period) and for guidance purposes only.

Darwin is a cosmopolitan capital city located on what is called the ‘Top End’ of Australia. There’s much to be seen and enjoyed, a lot of it from the many different cultures that make up the city’s people. Pre-book a hire car before you leave home and you’ll enjoy the lowest available prices when you book and have the greatest choice of Darwin car hire vehicles – in the rainy season a 4 x 4 might be worth considering. We only rent out high quality vehicles so you know you’re in safe hands with Rhino.

Darwin Mini Guide

Getting to Darwin
Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin all have flights from Perth or Sydney to Darwin, necessary as there are no direct flights to the city. A good idea is to stopover in Perth and enjoy a couple of days on the city’s beaches. Take the Stuart Highway west into the city centre from the airport.

Getting Around the City
The city is very compact with Route 1, the Stuart Highway, a backbone through it going right down to the port. All other roads spur off this, making getting around Darwin quite simple.

Getting out of Darwin
Route 1 heads south from the city whilst route 36 heads east. Out of the city the main sights are the world famous Kakadu National Park with its numerous displays of aboriginal art. Head to Katherine which is acknowledged to be where the tropical coastal landscape changes into the dry inland landscape.

Where to Stay in Darwin
The Quest Darwin is very nice at R1850 a night and has its own pool. Slightly more expensive is the Hilton Darwin, again with very comfortable rooms and great service.

Top Sights in Darwin
  • Darwin Wharf Precinct. This part of the city was bombed heavily by the Japanese in the war and many of the damaged buildings have been carefully preserved as a memorial to those killed.
  • Fanny Bay Gaol. Much of Australian history revolves around the penal colonies and here you get the chance to experience the workings of one of the country’s most notorious gaols. You can be locked in a cell or left in the dark damp corridors; either way you’ll soon feel as the prisoners must have once felt.
  • Casuarina Coastal Reserve. This is a wonderful ocean side national park named after the casuarina trees that grow there. The coastal path offers great walks with sweeping views.
  • Oil Storage Tunnels. These are a fascinating sight in Darwin dating from the Second World War. You can walk through two of the tunnels and see a photographic exhibition of their life.
